We are just back from a week at Lake Como and were taken by coach to St Moritz up the Bernina Pass and down the Maloja Pass back to the hotel. It's a full day and some of the driving would be difficult, esp. with oncoming traffic and tight bends. I would have loved to travel the Glacier Express from Tirano to SM but that was not on offer.
I am wondering if anyone can venture a guess at whether the Bernina Pass might be open to automobiles around May 1. I don't understand whether the road is open much of the year or just in the summer months. Thank you.

I know they try to keep the Pass open in winter and I think by May it should be passable to all traffic.
