A North Carolina Supreme Court decision refusing to further accelerate the appeals over an unsettled November election for a seat on the court means an official winner likely won't be finalized sooner,

The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled Thursday that it won't fast-track the lawsuit by a Republican Supreme Court candidate who's trying to throw out the ballots of more than 60,000 voters in his attempt to reverse the 2024 election results.

The state has never used that method to execute a prisoner. The last time an inmate was killed by a firing squad was in 2010 in Utah.

Only three inmates in the US have been executed by firing squad since 1976. All were in Utah, with the last one taking place in 2010.
