House Republicans on Tuesday advanced a measure that would rename the Kennedy Center's opera house after first lady Melania Trump — as President Trump boosts his influence over the center.

A short amendment made to the fiscal 2026 Interior-Environment spending bill in Congress called for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts venue to be named after the first lady, and it passed 33 to 25.

House Republicans have advanced a proposal to rename the Kennedy Center's Opera House, one of the center's major theaters, the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”
