Nathan Eovaldi’s scratch from his scheduled Sunday start was a bit of a surprise. Now, the Texas Rangers are hopeful he can start against the Athletics.

ARLINGTON — Nathan Eovaldi plans to pitch either Wednesday against the Athletics or Friday against the Atlanta Braves. The Texas Rangers ’ veteran was scratched from his start Sunday against the Detroit Tigers because of back soreness he felt Saturday.

The Texas Rangers have placed veteran reliever Chris Martin on the injured list, while a pair of Athletics rookies are also out of action.

Fien, the Rangers’ first-round pick in the 2025 MLB draft, signed his first professional contract on Tuesday at Globe Life Field. He took some questions from the media, some photos on the field and then took batting practice with current Rangers stars like Josh Jung. Jung was the Rangers’ first-round pick in 2019 out of Texas Tech.

The Rangers also recalled outfielder Michael Helman and pitcher Cole Winn and sent infielder Justin Foscue and outfielder Alejandro Osuna back to the minors.

If that wasn’t enough baseball-style humor, there was Michael Helman — recalled just today in place of the scuffling Alejandro Osuna — finishing off the four-run fifth inning with his first ever big league home run in the same frame as Freeman’s first hit.
