ATLANTA — For more than a month, the Georgia Aquarium has been taking care of coral from The Florida Aquarium. The coral was moved in October for safekeeping as Hurricane Milton headed toward Tampa.
The Georgia Aquarium is part of a select group working to save and restore the reefs. Historically high water temperatures off the Florida Keys have caused corals in Florida to die in record numbers.
In December 2023, MARTA dismantled and cleaned two decommissioned rail cars and shipped them off to Artificial Reef L, which sits around 23 nautical miles off of Georgia's Ossabaw Island.
