NEW YORK (AP) — Irv Gotti, the boisterous, smiley music mogul who founded Murder Inc. Records and was behind major hip-hop and R&B artists, has died. He was 54.

Irv Gotti, famed music producer and founder of Murder Inc. Records, who helped launch the careers of such artists as Ashanti, Ja Rule and DMX, has died at 54.

Irv Gotti, Murder Inc. record label founder who launched Ja Rule and Ashanti to stardom, dies at 54. Gotti died at age 54 after cofounding Murder Inc. Records with his brother, Chris, in 1998.
