Sedimentary rocks include common types such as chalk, limestone, sandstone, clay and shale. Sedimentary rocks cover 75% of the Earth's surface.

The minerals present in the sandstone are primarily quartz, felspar, mica, clays, iron compound and siderite, of which the last two are most responsible for the various colours in the stone.
