He later joined the Ranger Company A, 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion, where he patrolled the area around the landing sites in search of enemy troops.

He was honorably discharged in December 1945 after the deactivation of the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Drake returned to Hawley and worked for the Ashland Tree Company.
