His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and the founder of Aga Khan Development Network, is dead.

His Highness the Aga Khan is the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. “Our thoughts are with the family of His Highness and the wider Ismaili community,” he wrote.

The funeral ceremony for His Highness Prince Karim al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV will take place on Saturday at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, Portugal.

The burial ceremony to be conducted in Egypt will also be private, it said. Aga Khan IV is said to have passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, aged 88, surrounded by his family.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions, the Aga Khan was appointed as an honorary Companion of the Order of Canada in 2005 and granted honorary Canadian citizenship in 2009.
