Prosecutors indicted detained South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Sunday on charges of leading an insurrection with his short-lived imposition of martial law last month.

Prosecutors in South Korea have made a second request to extend the detention of impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol over a criminal investigation into his short-lived martial law declaration after a court rejected their previous request.

South Korean investigators asked prosecutors to indict the country's detained President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived imposition of martial law last month, as it accused him of rebellion, abuse of power and obstruction of parliament on Thursday.

The Constitutional Court is separately deliberating whether to formally dismiss Yoon Suk Yeol as president or reinstate him. Yoon was impeached and suspended by the assembly last month.

Supporters of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol continued to protest on Tuesday near the Constitutional Court in Seoul. The protest took place as Yoon attended the fifth hearing of his impeachment trial over his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.
