San Marino claims to be the oldest existing sovereign state and its oldest constitutional republic. It was first established as an independently-ruled monastic community in 301 AD.

This tiny landlocked country is the fifth-smallest in the world and, unlike its neighbours, only receives around two million tourists each year.
