Fort Tolukko is a small fortification that was erected in 1522 on the east coast of Ternate facing Halmahera. It was one of the colonial forts built to control the trade in clove spices, which prior to the eighteenth century were only found in the Maluku Islands.

Fort Tolukko was originally a Portuguese-made structure which controls almost all of the spice trade in Ternate during 16th century. A Portuguese army commander named Francisco Serraow was built a fort with the name of St. Lucas as a defense fort, as well as a storage centers for Ternate genuine spice.

Fort Tolukko near Ternate Airport is impossibly cute, a pint-sized fort that seems more at home in the twelfth than the twenty-first century. You almost expect guards with crossbows to be standing in the little round gatehouse towers.

From the top of this small fort you have a great view on Ternate city, the ocean, to Tidore and Halmahera island with its volcanoes. Even great to take pictures from starting and landing aircraft. Nice garden in front of the fort.
