Kang's role in Tokyo Drift was originally written as a one-off character in an almost straight-to-DVD release: an opportunity for a rapper to make a cameo, tossing his keys to the main character (portrayed by Lucas Black).

Has played the same character, Han, in six movies directed by Justin Lin: Better Luck Tomorrow (2002), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), and, evidently, F9: The Fast Saga (2021). The filmmakers have said that Better Luck Tomorrow serves as the character's origin story.

Kang says that before he was cast as Han in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift he was unaware of the drifting subculture that exists in Japan. It wasn't until he began researching for the part that he learned what a popular sport drifting actually is all over the world.

Sung-Ho Kang is a Korean-American actor and producer from Clarkston, Georgia who is widely known for playing Han Lue from the Fast & Furious series of films and Better Luck Tomorrow. He also acted in Raya and the Last Dragon, Pearl Harbor, Ninja Assassin and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
